B2 First Writing: essay, article, email, review, report
B2 First Writing asks for two pieces in eighty minutes: a compulsory essay, and one task chosen from the article, email or letter, review and report. Examiners mark content, communicative achievement, organisation and language, so a piece that answers the question in the right register and joins its paragraphs properly beats a piece full of ambitious vocabulary that misses a bullet point.
What this paper asks of you
- Content: covering every point the task gives you, and nothing irrelevant.
- Register: choosing formal, neutral or friendly language to fit the reader named in the task.
- Organisation: paragraphs with topic sentences, and linking that shows the logic of the text.
- Language: a mix of structures and topic vocabulary, used accurately enough to be clear.
- Planning: two or three minutes spent deciding paragraphs before you write a word.
- Word count: staying close to the range given, since both halves of the paper need time.
- Audience: writing for the reader in the task, whether a teacher, a magazine editor or a manager.
- Purpose: knowing whether you are arguing, describing, recommending or informing.
- Editing: five minutes at the end for verb endings, articles, plurals and spelling.
- Timing: roughly forty minutes for each part, with the essay done first.
