C1 Advanced Writing: essay, proposal, report, review
C1 Advanced Writing asks for two pieces: a compulsory essay that weighs up ideas from an input text, and one task chosen from a set that includes a proposal, a report, a review and a letter. Each genre has a reader, a purpose and a shape, and candidates who ignore those lose marks that have nothing to do with their English.
What this paper asks of you
- Answering the whole task, including any part of the prompt that asks for a judgement or a recommendation.
- Choosing a register that fits the reader: a tutor, a committee, a manager or a magazine audience.
- Organising with a visible shape — paragraphs, and headings where the genre allows them.
- Using a range of structures accurately rather than a display of complex ones inaccurately.
- Linking within paragraphs, not only between them.
- Writing to length: neither a page short nor a page over.
- Planning before writing, because reorganising in the last five minutes is impossible.
- Using your own words rather than lifting phrases from the input text.
- Leaving time to check articles, agreement, tense and spelling at the end.
