TOEFL Speaking and Writing practice: all five tasks
The productive half of TOEFL iBT is a set of short, tightly timed tasks: forty-five seconds on a preference, a minute reporting a lecture against a reading, twenty minutes on an integrated essay, ten on a discussion post. Each has a shape that fits its clock. These five topics teach those shapes and the integration skills the integrated tasks are really testing.
What this paper asks of you
- Committing to a position in the first sentence of a spoken answer.
- Structuring forty-five seconds: position, reason, example, second reason.
- Reporting a source accurately without copying its wording.
- Summarising a campus notice in one sentence to leave room for the speaker’s reasons.
- Attribution: the reading claims, the professor counters, as Andrew points out.
- Pairing each lecture point with the reading point it answers.
- Developing one reason with a concrete detail instead of listing three.
- Delivery and intelligibility: pace, word endings, pauses in sensible places.
- Time discipline, including leaving a minute to check written work.
