A2 Flyers practice: past simple, going to and exam tasks
A2 Flyers is the last of the three Young Learners levels and the bridge to A2 Key for Schools. Children now tell stories in the past, talk about plans, read a longer text and spot differences in a picture while the examiner listens. The five topics below cover the grammar and the task types that decide how well that goes.
What this paper asks of you
- Past simple for finished events, including the irregular verbs children use most.
- Going to and will for plans and predictions.
- A longer reading text with gaps, where the missing word must fit grammar and meaning.
- Writing short answers of one to five words, spelled correctly from memory.
- A speaking task where the child describes differences between two pictures in full sentences.
- Wider vocabulary: the body, weather, jobs, travel, hobbies and the world around them.
- Question forms in more than one tense: did you, are you going to, have you got.
- Linking ideas with because, so, but and when.
- Understanding a short spoken conversation and picking out specific facts.
- Working independently for a longer paper without losing concentration.
