TOEIC Reading practice: Parts 5, 6 and 7 task by task
The TOEIC Reading test is a race against the clock in three stages: single sentences, short texts with gaps, then passages that finish with double and triple sets requiring a fact from one document and a fact from another. Most candidates lose marks twice — on word forms and prepositions early on, and on running out of time before the multi-passage sets. These five pages work on both.
What this paper asks of you
- Choosing a word form from its slot: a noun after an article, an adverb before an adjective, a participle after a linking verb.
- Verb tense and voice decided by a time marker or by whether the subject acts or is acted on.
- Business collocations that have to be known rather than reasoned out: meet a deadline, place an order, issue a refund.
- Prepositions and conjunctions, including the pairs that differ only in what follows them.
- Reading a gapped text for cohesion, including the sentence-insertion items.
- Skimming a notice, an email or an advertisement for purpose before reading any detail.
- Cross-referencing: taking a date, a price or a name from one document and matching it in another.
- Inference questions phrased as *What is suggested about…* or *What is NOT stated…*.
- Time management across the three parts, so the multi-passage sets are never answered in a panic.
- Recognising when to guess immediately and move on, because a single hard item is never worth two minutes.
