TOEIC Speaking & Writing practice: all the task types
TOEIC Speaking & Writing is a separate test from Listening & Reading, and it is scored on what you produce rather than what you recognise. The tasks are tightly defined — a text read aloud, a photograph described, questions answered under time pressure, sentences built from a picture and two keywords, and an email answered with the right number of points. These five pages give you a template for each.
What this paper asks of you
- Pronunciation, stress and intonation clear enough for a colleague to follow at first hearing.
- Speaking for a fixed number of seconds without long silences or false starts.
- Organising an answer in real time: a topic sentence, two supporting points, a close.
- Describing what is in front of you accurately, including position and action.
- Building grammatically complete sentences from two given words under strict time limits.
- Writing an email that answers every part of a written request and no more.
- Register: polite and businesslike in writing, clear and natural in speech.
- Using workplace vocabulary rather than general conversational English.
- Recovering from a mistake without stopping, because hesitation costs more than a slip.
- Managing preparation time, which is short and fixed for every task.
